James Roy is the author of thirty books for children and young adults, many of which are award-winners. Examples of these include his six CBCA Notable Books, the CBCA Honour Books Captain Mack and Billy Mack’s War, Anonymity Jones which won the Western Australian Premier’s Book Award, and his collection of linked stories, Town, which won the NSW Premier’s Literary Award and was nominated for the prestigious German Youth Literature Prize. One Thousand Hills, co-written with Noël Zihabamwe, tells the story of a boy living through the Rwandan genocide of 1994, and won the 2016 NSW Premier’s Young People’s History Award.

As a presenter, James is a much sought-after guest of schools, festivals and conferences. In addition to presenting multiple times at the Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane Writers Festivals, he has appeared at the Reading Matters conference and a number of CBCA conferences, and is a regular guest at many of the major children’s festivals, including Somerset, Voices on the Coast and Whitsunday Voices. He has conducted tours of Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China, Japan, the Unites States and Germany/Switzerland, and regularly travels to remote parts of Australia to work with young readers and writers. He also teaches creative writing to adults at the Australian Writers’ Centre, amongst others.

James lives in the Blue Mountains, plays in several bands, taking photos and cooking for his wife and two daughters.


James writes for a broad range of ages, and is just as comfortable presenting to all ages, from Stage One right through to adult/professional development. His presentations can be general author talks or targeted talks about a particular book, genre or topic, for small or large groups. He is also skilled at presenting creative writing workshops across a range of topics, including: General creative writing; Getting started; Characterisation; Editing; Poetry; Research; Short Story. Care is taken that the content of every talk and workshop is suitable for the age of the audience. Regardless of the topic or the audience, James is well known for a presentation style that is fresh, entertaining, relaxed, inspiring and informative.
